In the early 1980's the first consumer video cameras came to market and it was a very exciting advancement in photography.
Before that we had 8mm and Super 8mm film movie cameras. You bought the film on spools that were about 2" in diameter. You had to thread the film into your 8mm movie camera and you were ready to go. Lighting and focus were manual on the older models so you had to have some experience to get good quality movies.
Once you shot a spool of film you had to send it in for developement. When you got your processed film back you had to have a movie projector that you again had to thread the film reel at the top of the projector to a take up reel at the bottom. The film moved between a high intensity light bulb and a projection lense. And the final touch was a beaded white movie screen to watch your home movies.
That's why the VHS video camera was so exciting. You could record your family activities or whatever, take out your VHS tape, put it into your video player connected to you TV and there you go. You could see yourself on tv and any other activity you just recorded. It was amazing.
